About Beatriz Kearney Lopes
I am a Portuguese Irish artist studying sculpture in my third year at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, Ireland.
Themes and focus of my work
I am drawn to the processes of production and the physical labour involved in creating a work. Traditional craft practices frequently inform my practise; often associated with women’s labour, social activism and politics. I have been exploring the intersections between Ireland and Portugal, where god, nationalism and the rural family defined the main culture and political life. Despite their vastly differing relationship with colonialism they both share a history of activism, rebellion and resistance.
Another recurring theme is the history of illicit communication, the ways in which people have circulated ideas, dissent, and political information outside official channels. I am interested in early forms of underground communication, including illegal pamphlets, clandestine newspapers, and other forms of printed material used to disseminate ideas, organise resistance, and challenge authority.
